Because God is gracious, we don’t have to prove ourselves. Listen in as Kelly expounds on the glorious doctrine of the grace of God!
Teaching Notes:
GOD IS GRACIOUS
Defining Grace-
God’s self proclamation-Exodus 34 The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,
1)Origin of Grace-The will/purpose of God.
Exodus 33:18-Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”
19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.
Romans 9:15-For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.
2 Timothy 1:9-who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own PURPOSE AND GRACE, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
GRACE WAS GOD’S PLAN ALL ALONG. IT EXISTED BEFORE SIN DID.
2) THE NECESSITY OF GRACE-Man’s corruption and ruin in sin.
Genesis 6:9-The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Psalm 51:5-Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Jeremiah 17:9-The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Romans 3:23-for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Ephesians 2:1-3 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins
2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience-
3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
3) THE OBTAINING OF GRACE-God’s choosing/gift by faith
Grace is “the gift of God” which implies that it is free and freely distributed by the giver. A gift cannot ever be earned.
Ephesians 1-even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
Ephesians 2-even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved-
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Romans 5-1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.’7
5 So too at the present time there is a remnant, CHOSEN BY GRACE.
6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
7 What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. THE ELECT OBTAINED IT but the rest were hardened,
WHAT A GIFT OF GOD! JESUS PROVED HIMSELF WITH PERFECT OBEDIENCE TO THE FATHER WHICH IS IMPUTED TO ALL WHO BELIEVE.
WE DON’T HAVE TO PROVE OURSELVES CAUSE JESUS IS OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
ROMANS 10:4-For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
4)THE EFFECTS OF GRACE-Where our motivation comes from
IF WE TRULY UNDERSTAND GRACE WE WILL BE JOYFULLY MOTIVATED TO SERVE GOD.
WE WILL BE SO THANKFUL THAT GOD DOES NOT PLACE BURDENS ON US TO PERFORM/PROVE OURSELVES.
Foretold-Ezekiel 36-25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you.
26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
Psalm 40:8-I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”
2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;
2 Timothy 2:10-Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
